Christian: Ciao a tutti, io sono Christian il vostro insegnante di italiano. Benvenuti al nuovo episodio! Welcome to the new episode!

Noelia: Ciao a tutti!

Christian: Allora Noelia, come va con l'italiano?

Noelia: Abbastanza bene Chri. I'm just a little confused with some greetings I don’t understand... I'm not sure when to use "ciao"... I mean, in what specific context.

Christian: Bella domanda, as usual. Allora "ciao" è un saluto informale che si usa in famiglia o tra amici e lo si dice quando incontri qualcuno e quando vai via. So, ciao is an informal greeting used in colloquial context when you meet someone and when you are leaving.

Noelia: Ok, ora è più chiaro. Now it is much clearer, thank you. No, no...Grazie!

Christian: Prego Noe! Altre espressioni informali sono "salve" e "buona serata"

Noelia: Come sarebbe?

Christian: Salve e buona serata!

Noelia: Buonasera o buona serata?

Christian: Buona serata. Quando vuoi augurare di passare una buona serata. So, when you wish someone to enjoy the experience of the night, per esempio.

Noelia: mmm, per esempio? For example?

Christian: Io ti incontro in un ristorante e ti dico, “Come stai? Passa una buona serata!” I casually meet you in a restaurant and I wish you to have a good night.

Noelia: Can I say “Passa una bella serata”?

Christian: Ovviamente che sì, certo che lo puoi dire.

Noelia: Perfetto, ora è molto più chiaro.

Christian: Benissimo. Poi ci sono i saluti formali: so, now the formal greetings: buongiorno (good morning), buon pomeriggio (good afternoon) e buona sera (good evening). Quando vai via: arrivederci o arrivederla.

Noelia: Buon pomeriggio? Mmm, when I traveled across Italy people didn’t use “buon pomeriggio”, but “buon giorno” o “buona sera”..Christian, can you explain me why?

Christian: Certamente. Allora, buongiorno la mattina, buon pomeriggio il pomeriggio e buona sera la sera, but the majority of people use directly “buongiorno” and in the afternoon “buonasera”. It’s up to you, but personally, I love to use “buon pomeriggio” in the afternoon.

Noelia: Grazie, Chri!

Christian: Noelia noi ci conosciamo, quindi puoi dire “ciao” con me! So, we know each other pretty much. So, you can say "ciao" with me.
